REAWAKENING THE LIZARD

Nature Recovery Across the Lizard Peninsula

A bold, community-powered vision to restore and reconnect nature.

Something big is beginning…

Wildlife Groundswell is launching Re-awakening the Lizard — an ambitious, community-powered project to restore and reconnect nature across the entire peninsula.

From windswept heathlands to hidden valleys, from farms to coastlines, this is about working together to bring wildlife back and create a thriving, living landscape for future generations.

Why this matters

The Lizard is one of the most special places in the UK — rich in rare plants, wildlife and cultural heritage.

But despite this, nature here is in decline.

Habitats are becoming fragmented. Species that were once common are disappearing. And while important areas are protected, protection alone isn’t enough.

🌱 28% of the Lizard is already designated for nature
🌍 The national goal is 30% by 2030

Can we go further — and do it better, together?

Our vision

A connected, thriving Lizard landscape — rich in wildlife, shaped by people, and alive with possibility.

What we’re doing

We’re bringing people, knowledge and action together to restore nature at a landscape scale.

Our approach looks at two interconnected worlds:

🌿 The Wild Landscape

Expanding and reconnecting heathlands and coastal habitats, creating bigger, better, joined-up spaces for wildlife.

🌾 The Settled Landscape

Working with farmers and landowners to weave nature back into farmland — restoring hedgerows, wetlands, meadows and woodlands.

14 ways to reawaken the Lizard

We’ve identified a series of projects that together could transform nature across the peninsula, including:

  • Connecting habitats and wildlife corridors

  • Supporting farmers to work with nature

  • Restoring heathland, woodlands, rivers and ponds

  • Bringing back farmland birds and rare plants

  • Protecting and enhancing local wildlife sites

  • Exploring rewilding and species reintroductions

  • Helping people reconnect with nature

This is a community effort

Nature recovery can’t happen in isolation.

We’re working alongside farmers, landowners, organisations, schools and local communities — and we want you to be part of it.

What could you bring?

  • Your ideas

  • Your land or garden

  • Your time or skills

  • Your curiosity and care for this place

We want to hear from you:

  • What are you already doing for nature?

  • What should our priorities be?

Reawakening the Lizard: Nature Recovery across the Lizard peninsula

Drawing together and expanding on Wildlife Groundswell’s existing projects, and in collaboration with other organisations, Reawakening the Lizardis our most ambitious project to date! It aspires to restore nature on the Lizard peninsula to create a connected, diverse landscape, rich in plants and animals, benefitting wildlife and people.

28% of the land across the Lizard is designated for nature. This is a long way towards the county and national ambition of protecting 30% of the land (and sea) for nature by 2030. We all know that the Lizard peninsula is a special place. By taking collective action, can we ensure that we meet and hopefully exceed the challenge of having 30% of the Lizard protected and well-managed for wildlife?

We believe we can. We have produced a document detailing our initial thoughts and ideas and are in the process of drawing up a broad nature recovery framework, focusing on what habitats and species are important in our area and how we work together to restore nature. You can read more about it here.

To help us develop a nature recovery framework, we want to hear from everyone. What are you already doing for nature? What should are our collective priorities be? What do we want the Lizard to look like in 50 years, 100 years, time?
